The Unsubscribe Button is My New Best Friend
There is a very specific, deeply satisfying rush of dopamine that comes from finally scrolling to the bottom of a spam email and aggressively clicking "Unsubscribe."
But as we navigate the glorious, no-nonsense terrain of midlife, I have discovered that the power of the unsubscribe button doesn't have to be limited to our digital inboxes. In fact, it is the exact energy we need to bring into our real, everyday lives.
Think about the things currently draining your battery. The one-sided friendships that feel more like a part-time job. The manufactured family drama that flares up every summer like clockwork. The obligatory neighborhood barbecues where the potato salad is always questionable and the small talk is excruciating.
Consider this your official permission slip to opt-out.
We spent our twenties and thirties terrified of missing out, practically begging to be included on every mailing list of life. Now? The greatest luxury is a clean slate and an undisturbed weekend. We have earned the right to look at an invitation, a demanding text message, or a guilt trip, and simply click "remove me from this list."
Your time and energy are premium subscriptions, and not everyone gets a free trial anymore. Guard your peace fiercely, and don't be afraid to hit that button.
Keep thriving.
