Packing Light (Emotionally)

For decades, we functioned as the designated sherpas of summer vacation. We packed the sunscreen, the snacks, the extra phone chargers, and—most exhaustingly—everyone else's emotional equilibrium.

If someone was cranky, we smoothed it over. If the itinerary fell apart, we scrambled to fix it. We spent so much time managing the vibe of the room that we usually returned from a "vacation" needing a week in a dark, silent room just to recover.

But as we hit midlife, the baggage limits have officially changed.

This summer, we are practicing the fine art of packing light—and I am talking specifically about emotional baggage. You are officially off-duty as the family cruise director, the conflict mediator, and the manager of other people's good times.

If someone forgets their sunglasses, they can squint. If they are determined to be absolutely miserable at the family reunion because the rental house Wi-Fi is spotty, let them sulk. Their mood is no longer your emergency.

We only have so much energy in the reserves these days, and carrying the weight of everyone else's expectations is a young woman's game. Zip up your own suitcase, grab your iced coffee, and leave the drama at the boarding gate.

Keep thriving.
